A clearer picture. A voice you can hear.

Getting the picture and sound right makes a one-on-one video call easier to enjoy. Use this guide to prepare your camera, choose your microphone and work through common call-quality problems. To learn the matching controls, see How it works.

Set up a clear picture

Place your phone or computer on a stable surface and face a light source. A bright window behind you can make your face harder to see. Put the camera near eye level so you can look at the screen comfortably.

Before connecting, check the camera view and remove anything you do not want visible. Improving the lighting is often more useful than moving the camera closer. Leave the device in a position where you do not need to hold it throughout the call.

Choose the microphone you intend to use

If more than one microphone is connected, check which one the browser is using. A headset, built-in microphone and Bluetooth device can be different inputs. Confirm that the device is connected and not muted.

If you can hear the other person but they cannot hear you, check microphone permission separately from camera permission. Allowing the camera does not by itself mean the microphone is available.

If the camera preview is blank

Check that this website has camera permission, that the device is connected and that any physical camera shutter is open. Close another app that may be using the same camera, then check again.

In Chrome on a computer, camera and microphone choices are in Settings, under Privacy and security, then Site settings. Device-level privacy settings may also apply. Follow the browser’s own help for your device rather than changing unrelated settings.

If the picture freezes or sound breaks up

Try a more reliable connection and pause large downloads or uploads. If you are on Wi-Fi, move closer to the router where practical. Close other tabs or apps that are using significant bandwidth.

A connection problem can be on either side of a call. If the problem persists, finish the current session and retry through the matching screen. Refreshing the page during a call can interrupt it; it is not a guaranteed quality fix.

If you hear an echo or a delayed response

Try headphones and lower speaker volume so the microphone is less likely to pick up the call’s own audio. Avoid keeping the same conversation open on two nearby devices.

If responses arrive late, pause briefly before speaking again rather than talking over the other person. A better connection may help, but headphones alone cannot remove every kind of network delay.

Check changes before starting again

After changing permissions or selecting a different device, confirm the picture and microphone are available before entering another match. The browser may ask you to reload or restart before a setting takes effect.

If a call ends while you are testing, return through the matching screen when you are ready. For the difference between retrying, Next and stopping a session, use the matching guide rather than guessing from the browser’s back button.

A little more about live video calls.

My camera works in another app. Why is the browser blank?

Permissions can apply to the browser and to the individual website. Another app working does not prove that this site has access. Check the browser’s camera permission, selected camera and any device-level privacy control.

Are headphones required for a video call?

No, but they can reduce audio from the speakers feeding back into the microphone. If you use speakers, keep the volume comfortable and avoid having another nearby device play the same call.

Should I refresh the page during a video call?

Refreshing can interrupt the current call. Use the on-screen controls to leave first. If the browser requires a reload after a permission change, do that before entering another match and check the camera and microphone again.
